I will present the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) project, presently in development in Netherlands and in the USA, and discuss its expected impact in planetary and heliospheric science. Planetary objectives include the fast radio imaging of Jupiter's magnetosphere, the search for nonthermal radio emission from extrasolar planets, and the study of solar system planetary lightning. Heliosperic science consists of active and passive solar emission studies (flares, bursts and tracking of shocks and Coronal Mass Ejections), as well as active and passive ionospheric studies. The possible french technical participation to LOFAR will also be mentioned.
