An application of the wavelet analysis to astronomical images is presented. We show that this new method is a powerful tool for the detection of features whose scales are known. The detection is easy and accurate because, in a wavelet analysis, the effect of the background is removed. If a model is fitted to the objects, photometric data can be deduced from the parameters of the wavelet transform. If Gaussian models fit to the objects and to the point-spread function, the process is analytical. To extend the method to other models, numerical simulations have to be performed. The method has been applied to CCD observations of the galaxies VV 523 and M 31, performed at the Bernard Lyot 2 meters telescope of the observatoire du Pic-du-Midi. In VV 523, thirteen clumps have been detected and their sizes and B-I color indexes determined. The detection of twelve new globular clusters in the bulge of M 31 (including photometry and core radius determination) enables to fill the faint part of the luminosity distribution of M 31 globular clusters. Furthermore the new clusters are similar in magnitude and core radius to those classified as post core collapse clusters in the Milky Way.
