The advective-acoustic instability has been introduced in astrophysics to explain the instability of Bondi--Hoyle accretion flows. Its effects seem to be most promising in the problem of core collapse supernovae, where it contributes to revive the stalled shock during the first second of the explosion, leading to an asymmetric explosion, a pulsar kick and spin up. I review our understanding of this instability, and comment on its treatment in numerical simulations.
