Observational evidence for energy storage in the active region magnetic field above the solar photosphere is unsatisfactory, due to the inability to observe the magnetic field's three-dimensional structure. Indirect evidence is instead adduced from changes in structures which, it is assumed, can trace the magnetic field in view of changes in the line-of-sight and transverse components of the photospheric magnetic field, as well as from mass flow patterns observed by proper motions and line-of-sight Doppler shifts, and from radio observations. Together, these data confirm that energy sufficient for flare production is stored in active region magnetic fields, with a characteristic time scale of hours. Critical observations are not, however, available as yet.
