Substantial configuration interaction (CI) calculations for the lowest eight states of Si II, and of the oscillator strengths between them, are presented. The general CI code CIV3 is used to determine analytic wavefunctions for these eight lowest terms. Excellent agreement is found for energy differences between the experimental values and the calculated ones; length and velocity values of allowed electric dipole transitions between the states are also shown. Reanalysis of the measured equivalent widths shows that the results are in good agreement with other recent theoretical calculations and demonstrate the strong cancellations which occur due to configuration interaction. The results are also in reasonable agreement with observations of all the Si II interstellar resonance lines apart from that at 1808 A, and adoption of the theoretical oscillator strengths is recommended.
