Observations of relatively large numbers of stars in the SMC cluster NGC419 and the LMC cluster NGC1846, as well as of three stars in Kron 3 and two in NGC121 are presented with the aim of determining the effective temperature of the giant branch formed by oxygen-rich giants in stellar systems which contain carbon stars, and to determine the luminosity at which dredge-up of carbon first occurs in stellar systems of known age and abundance. The results of JHK photometry are presented, and the observed colors and magnitudes are listed. Absolute K magnitudes are plotted against intrinsic J-K color for all the measured stars, and individual H-R diagrams are plotted for all the clusters. It is estimated that carbon stars first appear on the asymptotic giant branch of the intermediate age Magellanic Cloud clusters at bolometric magnitude -4.3 to -4.6. It is deduced that dredge-up at helium shell flashes cannot produce carbon stars from stars with masses less than 0.9 solar masses if the abundance ratio Fe/H is about -1, or less than about 1.3 solar masses if the ratio is about zero.
