An optical linear polarization map is presented for the compact H II region S 156. The measurements confirm the presence of an extensive dust component and show that the dominant source of illumination for the light scattered by the dust is the bright central star responsible for exciting the entire nebula. The data are used to interpret the nebular geometry in terms of the proposed 'blister' model.
