The authors have identified over 90 candidate M supergiants in the spiral arms of the ScI galaxy M101. The most luminous M supergiants in the sample have an apparent brightness, uncorrected for reddening, of V = 20.9 mag ± 0.2. Adopting the luminosity calibration derived by Humphreys for the brightest M supergiants of MV ≈ -8.0 ± 0.2 gives an apparent distance modulus (m-M)V = 28.9 mag ± 0.3. Estimates of reddening in the region of the candidate M supergiants suggest a true modulus of ≈ 28.6 mag.
