The advantages offered by the use of a derivative filter in astronomical spectroscopy are discussed. The filter can retrieve multiple components of an apparently unresolved blend and determine the position of a line peak. The effect of the filtering of an analytical function is described, and some applications to real cases are considered. The Gaussians resulting from repeated passages through a derivative filter are shown and compared, and the effect of noise on the data is considered. Applications to the liens of a spectrum of the Seyfert glaxy Mkn 1040 are examined, showing wavelengths, line intensities and positions computed by means of the center of mass and of the derivative filter. The agreement is very good.
