The authors present spectroscopic observations between 7000 and 10000 Å of two very red objects in the direction of the galactic center. The spectra show a continuum with no evidence of the [S III] lines at 9069 and 9532 Å. The lack of [S III] lines and the continuum slope rule out previous suggestions that these objects are compact H II regions or compact star clusters at the galactic center. These objects are most likely reddened foreground stars a few kiloparsecs from the galactic center.
