Scientific paper

Various techniques for high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of planetary atmospheres are reviewed. Resolving powers of 106 are now possible at 1 - 5 μm with Fourier transform spectrometers and at 10 μm with heterodyne spectrometers. The extension of high-resolution spectroscopy to the far-infrared is currently under development. The role of ground-based high-resolution spectroscopy compared to observations by spacecraft is discussed.
