Photometric observations are presented for four recently discovered β Cephei variables in the very young open cluster NGC 6231. Fourier analyses of about 500 observations of each star were performed to determine the oscillation frequency spectra. Comparison with variables in NGC 3293 shows that the β Cep stars in NGC 6231 are only slightly evolved from the ZAMS, indicating that the instability strip is at least one magnitude wide. Though the periods of β Cep stars in NGC 6231 are much shorter than those in NGC 3293, the pulsation constants are about the same. The consequences of these findings for the excitation mechanism are discussed.
