Experiments in which a simple polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon such as naphthalene (C10H8) is exposed to an energetic plasma environment have resulted in a—material that has spectral characteristics similar to those of the interstellar ultraviolet (UV) extinction curve and the unidentified infrared emission bands. This laboratory product, which initially most resembled “fresh” interstellar hydrocarbons, became spectrally more similar to aged interstellar molecules upon further exposure to a plasma environment that included Lyman-α radiation. When heated to elevated temperatures, the laboratory product demonstrated resiliency to destruction and displayed reversible temperature-dependent spectral changes that resulted in better agreement with the infrared (IR) profile of heated dust near the star V854 Cen. Aqueous processing of the plasma product generated a material resembling the acid- insoluble organic residue of the Orgueil meteorite, suggesting that aqueous processing of interstellar hydrocarbons within planetesimals is a significant factor in the production of meteoritic organics. High- performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy revealed that aromatic double-ring and single-ring structures might also be present in the laboratory product and therefore might be present in the interstellar medium, producing as-yet-unidentified spectral features in the UV and IR.
