The mission profiles and television system design features of the two Vega probes to be launched for Venus and Halley's Comet encounters are described. The probes will be launched in late 1984 and will drop a probe for a surface landing on Venus in 1985. In March 1986 a close pass of the Halley's Comet will be made, with the spacecraft and comet passing each other at relative velocities of 74 km/sec at a distance of 1000 km. Telemetry will be broadcast at 3 kbit/sec and 65 kbit/sec. Data will be stored for 20 days and then transmitted. The on-board television cameras will sight the comet, automatically track preselected regions, automatically image the comet in various spectral ranges, and transmit the imagery. Imaging will be performed by CCDs, and 90 sec will be consumed for the transmission of a single image. A block diagram of the Vega television system is provided, together with details of all functional systems.
