It is shown that the secular variation of the date of maximum activity of a meteor shower due to planetary perturbations occurs at the rate of variation of the longitude of the ascending node of the orbit of the swarm only when the radius vector of this node is close to its maximum or minimum value. For small inclinations the shift in the date of the activity maximum is determined by the combined variation of the longitude of the perihelion and the eccentricity of the orbit of the swarm. The theoretical calculations of the shifts in the activity maxima of the Leonid, Quadrantid, Bielid, Geminid, eta Aquarid, and Orionid meteor showers agree satisfactorily with the observations.
