While the classification category 'intermediate Seyfert galaxy' is useful, it primarily refers to observable quantities partially dependent on the equipment used. Most such galaxies have properties similar to Seyfert 1 galaxies, despite a more noticeable narrow-line component in the Balnmer lines. The narrow line luminosities of intermediate Seyfert galaxies are considerably weaker than those of Seyfert 2 galaxies of comparable Balmer line luminosity, perhaps as a result of the high density broad line region blocking off ionizing radiation from the narrow line region. Despite the low luminosity of narrow line gas in the intermediate Seyfert galaxies, the ratios of the lines from this region are largely similar to those in Seyfert 2 galaxies, indicating that the energy input into the narrow line region of intermediate Seyfert galaxies is similar to that in Seyfert 2 galaxies.
