The authors have discovered three regions of intense optical emission in the inner ≡2 kpc of the Cen A jet. Two of the regions coincide with X-ray and radio knots and emit strong optical continuum radiation with superposed emission lines. The third region is situated between the other two and coincident with a low surface brightness inter-knot zone in the radio and X-ray maps. Spectra were obtained for each of the regions in the range 3700 - 7500 Å. The observed line emission is not representative of normal H II regions and is probably produced by shock heating or photoionization by a power-law continuum. The optical continuum could be due to synchrotron radiation. The line emission is attributed to dense clumps immersed in the flow. Possible origins of the clumps and a large-scale shock in the jet are discussed.
