From a theorem first proved by McIntosh (1975, 1978), it is known that all spatially self-similar (SSS) models with perfect fluid matter (the energy density unequal to the pressure of the fluid) are tilted. This is at variance with the spatially homogeneous (SH) space-times, where most of the models are untilted (King and Ellis, 1973). One of the few SH-tilted models is the locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) stiff matter (the energy density being equal to the pressure of the fluid) Bianchi type-V solution obtained by Maartens and Nel (1978). An electromagnetic field was first incorporated into the tilted Bianchi type-V space-time by Jantzen (1980). The solution given by Jantzen was an SSS solution. What is more, Jantzen has developed a systematic algorithm for producing SSS-solutions from certain SH-solutions. Chao (1981), however, has pointed out that this procedure seems unsuitable for obtaining solutions for the equations of state where the pressure of the fluid is zero or one-third the energy density. The SSS-Bianchi type-(f)V field equations given by Chao are considered. The solutions represent anisotropic models that can be made consistent with the observed isotropy.
