This paper is devoted to stress the importance of a very good knowledge of the mass-luminosity (ML) relation when trying to derive information on the initial mass function from the luminosity function (LF). As the LF depends on the derivative of the ML relation, it may vary dramatically as a consequence of small variations in the shape of the ML relation. This problem is illustrated by comparing the theoretical LFs obtained for the low end of the main sequence adopting a semi-empirical ML relation, and a theoretical one recently computed by the authors, respectively. The two LFs differ by at least a factor 10 at V = 18 mag.
