The theory of gravitational lensing will briefly be reviewed, focussing on relevance for cosmological problems. The basic theoretical framework will then be applied to highlight the use of gravitational lensing tools for studying cosmological questions. Predictions for, and results from, observations will be given where appropriate. Three classes of applications will be discussed, namely: (1) weak gravitational lensing by large-scale structures, including the impact of non-linear structure growth; in particular cosmic shear, lensing of the cosmic microwave background, and lensing-induced correlations; (2) galaxy cluster reconstruction by means of weak gravitational lensing, again with a focus on cosmological implications; (3) the statistics of strong gravitational lensing events and constraints on cosmological parameters derived therefrom.
