This is a very special issue of the Astronomical Journal. It celebrates the fact that it has been 150 years since the Journal was founded by Benjamin Apthorp Gould. To commemorate the event, we begin this issue with a set of four historical papers relevant to the Journal's beginnings and to its long life. The papers grew out of a special session of the 1998 June American Astronomical Society meeting that was sponsored by the Society's Historical Astronomy Division. We on the staff of the Journal are grateful to the authors and to the Division for providing a fitting celebration of our sesquicentennial year.
