We present scanning Fabry-Perot observations of HH 311 covering the red [S II] lines. A study of the kinematics of this region shows a number of knots, which appear to be kinematically associated with the HH 111 outflow. We also detect diffuse emission, which appears to be light from the knots that is scattered on dust present in the surrounding environment. A comparison of the line widths of the knots with previously measured proper motions leads us to conclude that HH 311 is moving into a mostly stationary environment. From this, we conclude that it is likely that HH 311 is the leading working surface of the blue lobe of the HH 111 outflow and that no further knots will be discovered at larger distances from the outflow source.
