The year 1996 covered the most southerly apparition of the jovian cycle, and also the start of the Galileo spacecraft's orbital mission. There were few changes from the 1995 appearance. The South Tropical Region including the Great Red Spot looked very much as it had done during the Voyager missions, although SEBs jetstream activity died out. The South Temperate ovals formed a striking stable array, eventually consisting of six anticyclonic ovals spaced at 18-degree intervals, with some cyclonic ovals between them. The most important development was a new 'NEB expansion event', which began in early April and spread around the planet by late June. This broadened the North Equatorial Belt to the north, and strongly affected the NEBs features including the projection/hotspot at the Galileo probe entry site.
