The interaction of emission from a cosmological gamma-ray burst with the interstellar medium surrounding the parent galaxy is investigated. It is shown that, irrespective of the particular model used to account for the formation of cosmological gamma-ray bursts, the brightest bursts should have counterparts at visual and ultraviolet wavelengths. The light curves of such counterparts are calculated for bursts with energies of 10^51 and 10^52 erg in interstellar media with various densities.
