It is shown that debris trailing of astronomical fields results from field crossing by on orbit spacecraft and larger pieces of debris capable of reflecting sufficient sunlight to register on astronomical detectors. Such incursion into observed fields of view leads to degradation or loss of the observation. Measures to mitigate the problem are suggested. The paper is prefaced by expressing concern at recent proposals for efficient thin film solar reflectors which could have very serious long term consequences for optical astronomy.
