Galaxy Mergers: N-Body Simulations, Galaxy Groups: Dynamics

Scientific paper

Statistics of spin orientation in binary galaxies was used by Helou in a study of the process of galaxy formation, who found that the spins of spiral galaxies in binary systems were anticorrelated, so suggesting a dependence of the inclination on the spin in galaxy mergers. The author studies this dependence for small groups of galaxies. An N-body code is developed which uses an inclination dependent dynamical friction law in mergers. It is found that the anticorrelation does exist for small groups of galaxies.
