We report the first reliable measurement of the nebular [O i] λ 5577 Angstroms emission line in the Orion nebula. Diagnostic diagrams based on the 5577 [O i], 6300 [O i], 3467 [N i], 5197 [N i], 5200 [N i] emission lines indicate that the bulk of the nebular emission in the partially ionized zone of the Orion nebula is produced in regions with low to moderate electron densities (2 x 103 -- 4 x 104 cm-3) and with electron temperatures in the 9000 to 11000 K range. This result permits to estimate the relative importance of the physical mechanisms that produce the [Fe II] emission lines.
