Bearing in mind the relatively low solar activity during the last part of 1985 and the beginning of 1986, the sudden burst of activity at the beginning of February was most surprising and the fact that auroral activity could be seen in the UK at latitudes as low as 50 degrees N indicated that an event of considerable magnitude took place on the Sun, producing strong magnetic disturbances and associated visual phenomena. Observations are reported from UK observers and also from an observer in Hawaii at a geomagnetic latitude of 25 degrees.
