We present uvbyβ photometry obtained with a CCD for the open clusters NGC 3496 and Melotte 105. The distance moduli and reddenings are determined. The field of NGC 3496 contains at least two populations: an intermediate-age group including a small number of late B- to early A-type stars and an older group most conspicuously represented by a red giant clump. Fitted isochrones give ages of about 400 and more than 630 Myr respectively. There is considerable differential reddening. We present data for a newly discovered 5.54-d Cepheid in the field on NGC 3496 which, judging by its age and reddening, is a background star. Three variables with periods of hours may be δ Scuti stars. Melotte 105 is a considerably younger cluster with an age of about 250 Myr. There is no evidence for differential reddening in this cluster and the main-sequence band is much better defined than in NGC 3496.
