Differential reddening across the globular cluster M4 is studied using KI column density measurements towards 16 stars in the cluster and the empirical N(KI)-E(B-V) relationship presented by Chaffee & White for the Sco-Oph region. A value of E(B-V) towards each star is obtained, which reveals the existence of a patchy reddening variation across the cluster face. We report a range in E(B-V) of ~=0.16 mag and an average value of E(B-V)~=0.32+/-0.01 for the cluster. Using HI observations towards the cluster, we have derived an average N(KI)/N(HI)~=2.3x10^-10. We also investigate the distribution of the dust in this direction using IRAS surface brightness maps. An apparent correlation is found between the dust and gas in this direction from a comparison of the 100-μm emission with the KI column densities in the optical spectra of the cluster stars. The I_60/I_100 ratio indicates a dust temperature of ~=23K for each of the sightlines to the 16 stars observed in M4.
