The Workshop for New Faculty in Physics and Astronomy, co-sponsored by AAPT, APS, and AAS, is currently in its ninth year. More than 500 newly hired faculty at U.S. colleges and universities have participated in this annual program, which provides an intensive introduction to teaching techniques that have been shown to be effective in a variety of situations and institutions. By participating in this Workshop, new faculty can learn how to enhance the effectiveness of their teaching with minimal investment in time, thereby not only improving physics instruction in their institutions but also leaving more time available for research or other professional development. In this talk I will discuss the need for this program in the physics community, the format of the Workshop, indications of its effectiveness, and the role of programs such as this Workshop in preparing the next generation of faculty.
