The stochastic excitation mechanism of solar acoustic oscillations is reviewed. Using a simple model problem it is shown that the energy input rate in low degree modes is consistent with the observed rates. I describe how asymmetric line profiles of p-modes and the power spectrum above the acoustic cutoff frequency provide information about the source location in the convection zone.
