While spectacular astronomy images from space- and ground-based observatories make for great publicity, maximum scientific return results from detailed analysis and modeling of spectroscopic observations. The vast majority of information about the Universe comes to us in the form of photons which are produced primarily by atomic and molecular processes. It would therefore seem obvious that atomic and molecular physics would play an important role in astrophysics, however, this is often under-appreciated. I will briefly describe a few cases, out of a multitude of examples, in which a detailed understanding of the atomic and molecular physics is crucial to an accurate description of the astrophysical phenomenon including the effect of the lithium cosmological opacity on microwave background anisotropies, molecular opacities in substellar objects, and x-ray emission in the solar system. Advances in theoretical laboratory astrophysics will be highlighted.
