The IUE studies of far ultraviolet spectra of normal galaxies are reviewed. The UV energy distribution of late-type galaxies and BCG is easily interpreted in terms of star formation (starburst galaxies), whereas that of early type galaxies, characterized by a steep rising branch (30,000 K) shortward of 2000 A is not straightforward. The normalized intensity level of this branch correlates with metallicity. This fact led to explore PAGB stars as responsible of the far UV emission. Using a model of stellar evolution and the population synthesis technique, it is possible to demonstrate that this model is very consistent, suggesting that ellipticals are made by old stars. Since in elliptic galaxies star formation is suggested by phenomena like cooling flows, for instance, it is proposed that the UV spectra of ellipticals are the results of two components, namely the old generation of stars and a more recent one triggered by these flows.
