I will review the history and present the case that supermassive black holes are responsible for the prodigious power output of active galactic nuclei and quasars. Such black holes now appear to be ubiquitous in the centers of all bright galaxies, whether they are active or not, and the growth of supermassive black holes was an integral part of the general growth of structure in the universe. Hence while active galactic nuclei and quasars are interesting phenomena in and of themselves, they have also turned out to be ecologically important in the universe.
