The IUE observations of narrow emission lines of He2, CIII, NIII, NIV, NV, and OIII in the short wavelength spectrum of SN 1987A are presented. It is shown that they originate from a circumstellar shell, which is at least a light year in size and whose nitrogen abundance relative to both carbon and oxygen is greatly enhanced as compared with cosmic values. Because of its characteristics, this shell is likely to be the remnant of the wind ejected by the progenitor star when it was a red supergiant.
