The authors attempt to argue that such a generally applicable meachnism may indeed exist on the basis of the bimodal character of black hole accretion: the quasi-spherical mode and the disk mode. A time-dependent accretion flow would probably oscillate between the two modes, exhibiting a periodic or quasi-periodic or chaotic behaviour. This could be used to explain the luminosity variability of active galactic nuclei and Cyg X-1, thus providing a strong observational support for the existence of black holes.
