From published sources including the IRAS survey, we collected a sample of 6 E and SO galaxies with dust lanes and a comparative sample of 32 such galaxies without dust lanes. We applied the non-parametric U-test to the distributions of infrared luminosity and infrared/visible colour of the two samples and found that the distributions are not statistically different at the 5% level. Thus, there is no evidence, at this level, that dust lanes in ellipticals are sites of intensive star formation with strong infrared emission. On the infrared two-colour diagram, ellipticals without dust lanes are located in the same region as normal galaxies, while some of those with dust lanes are located far off the region; these are often active galaxies.
