Scientific paper
For a given telescope size, the Vilnius photometric system can reach much fainter stars (millions) than can be imaged in a spectrograph, but cannot go as faint as the UBV system. For the seven filters used the descriptions, central wavelengths, and passbands were carefully selected using known values for the absolute energy distributions of stars of different spectral type and interstellar extinction law. Various combinations of measurements through particular filters are made to determine spectral type, luminosity class and relative chemical composition of a star, and the amount of interstellar reddening to that star.
