The optical variability of seven X-ray selected blazars has been investigated on timescales ranging from minutes to decades. The results indicate that the occurrence and amplitude of microvariability is independent of the state of the blazar, a characteristic also found for a radio-selected blazar BL Lacertae (Miller,1999). This result precludes processes that require a discrete amount of energy and implies that the ``intensity'' of the microvariations scales with the overall intensity of the blazar. This work was supported in part by grants from NASA, the Research Corp. and GSU's PEGA RPE program.
