We have analyzed long-exposure Chandra observations of 14 nearby LINERs (low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions). We have examined the morphology of the central kiloparsec in the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-10 keV) energy bands and there is no dominant trend. 55% of the LINERs in the sample have a hard and luminous central point source, 50% have a cluster of point sources and 55% have diffuse emission. We have then extracted spectra of the central point sources in order to determine their nature and X-ray luminosity. We also extracted the composite spectrum of the non-central point sources in each galaxy and the spectrum of the diffuse emission to estimate their contribution to the energy budget. It then appears that the luminosity of the active galactic nucleus (if present) is low (LX(0.5-10 keV)<1040 erg s-1 and often dominated by the luminosity of the other components in the central region. So LINERs appear to be a heterogeneous class of objects.
