The authors present results of aperture synthesis mapping of line emission from the molecules HNC, C2H, and HC3N in the envelope of the carbon star IRC +10216. The data were obtained with the U.C. Berkeley millimeter interferometer and achieved angular and velocity resolutions of 8arcsec and 2 km s-1. These observations clearly show the shell-like structure predicted by the model calculations and constitute strong evidence for the importance of ion-molecule reactions and photochemical processes in the circumstellar envelope of IRC +10216.
