On the basis of uvby and visual photometry, and spectrography in the optical region collected over a time span of 10 years, we report large amplitude photometric and spectroscopic variations, and the onset of a sudden brightening event in the system of the extreme supergiant HDE 326823. The event fits the picture that the H-deficient N-rich star is on its way towards becoming a WN star.
