The recent detection of X-rays from SN 1987A by the satellite Ginga coupled with spectroscopic limitations on the velocity of the edge of the helium core strongly constrain the allowed models for the supernova. The authors have calculated synthetic high-energy spectra resulting from the decay of radioactive 56Co for model supernovae. These model supernovae are all based upon the explosion of a 6 M_sun; helium core. Each synthesized 0.07 M_sun; of radioactive 56Ni. Time-dependent spectra are calculated in the energy range 5 keV - 4 MeV using Monte Carlo techniques. Gamma-line light curves and profiles are calculated by direct integration of the transfer equation. When used together with constraints derived from optical observations, the authors find that some mixing of 56Co further out in the ejecta has probably taken place and that the column depth to the center is from 4 to 7×104 (106s/t)2g cm-2.
