In recent years, a variety of rate coefficients have been calculated for radiative association reactions (A++B →A+B+hν) thought to be important in the chemistry of both dense and diffuse interstellar clouds. It is one purpose of this paper to lay the groundwork for a general and quantitative treatment of radiative association via excited electronic states. The authors present expressions which yield the enhancements in rate coefficient obtained in both cases that can be attained in radiative association processes if excited electronic states of the complex are accessible. The second purpose of this paper is to utilize the theoretical expressions developed to calculate the size of enhancements that can be expected for the radiative association rate coefficients present in the literature.
