We report discovery of an X-ray pulsar with a period of 36 sec in the supernova remnant (SNR) W63 (G82.2+5.3) using ASCA data. A hard X-ray source (W63 X-1) located toward the northern part of the SNR W63 was revealed in the ASCA GIS image. Its X-ray emission is much harder than diffuse soft X-ray emission from the SNR W63. The hard source is best fit by a power-law with a photon index of 2 and an absorption of 5× 1021 cm-2. We searched for a period using Fourier analysis and found that this source has a period of 36 sec with 5σ detection. The period and spectrum suggest that this source is a high mass X-ray binary (a Be star or OB supergiant companion), a low mass X-ray binary, or an isolated neutron star. We have searched for an optical counterpart using the Palomar 60 inch telescope using R, V, I and Hα bands, and found a possible counterpart of the X-ray source within the ASCA position errors which features Hα excess emission. This suggests that the X-ray source is a high mass X-ray binary with a Be companion. We discuss the possibility that this pulsar is associated with the SNR W63.
