Blazar X-ray and gamma-ray observations offer us the rare possibility to study jets of Active Galactic Nuclei at their very bases, a fraction of a parsec away from the central engines. This talk will summarize the main science drivers of the observations. An overview of recent observational results will be given. Upcoming missions and experiments expected to have a major impact on the field will be discussed.
