The first identification of x-ray and optical afterglow associated with gamma-ray bursts has provided a wealth of new information to constrain models for GRB production mechanisms. Rapid availability of small gamma and x-ray positional error boxes has dramatically improved, and optical counterpart searches have provided both bright optical transients and significant upper limits on counterpart brightness. Some results on searches and control samples will be presented, as well as a discussion of optical afterglow properties, search efficiencies and limitations, and the strength of identification of OTs with gamma-ray bursts.
