In this paper we concentrate on some of the optical design features which are charactertistic of receiver systems operating on submillimetre-wave telescopes. In particular we are concerned with the development of heterodyne spectral line cameras (or imaging array receiver systems) for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Array receivers, both heterodyne and bolometric, will dramatically improve mapping efficiency at the telescope which at the moment is limited by the single pixel suite of receivers.
