CXOU J013651.1+154547 (M74 X-1) is a persistent ULX in M74, remarkable for the extreme (order of magnitude) variability it displays over timescales as short as ~ 2000 seconds. Here, we propose two new observations of this ULX to supplement previous Chandra and XMM-Newton data. This will produce an unprecedented record of the temporal and spectral characteristics of an extremely variable ULX. With this we can, for example, better define its behaviour for direct comparison with apparently similar Galactic sources such as the microquasar GRS1915+105, and constrain the possible cool accretion disc signature of an IMBH in its X-ray spectrum.
